Youth Hockey: 12U White,10U White Coyotes bring home weekend championships

The Kankakee Coyotes Youth Hockey Club came away from the MLK Holiday weekend with a pair of championships. The 12U White swept through the Chicago Midwinter Classic held in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, with five wins and no losses. The 10U White squad also posted an unblemished record in their five games at the Great Lakes Midwinter Classic in Holland, Michigan.

The Coyotes scored victories over two Ohio teams, the Rolling Meadows Renegades, and two one-goal victories over the Chicago Bruins.

The tourney wins featured great goalie play by Matthew Schultz and Katie Exton, a four-goal game by Jace LaCost, and great leadership from Matthew “Big Dog” Anderson.

The highlight of the tournament was a dramatic 5-4 OT victory over the Bruins in the Championship Game.  After squandering a 4-1 third period lead, the Coyotes won the championship just two minutes into sudden death overtime on a goal by Andrew Nugent.

The 10U White Coyotes were down 2-0 entering the 3rd period of the championship game, when two goals, one by Jake Kehoe and another by Carter Forkenbrock, tied the game.  The game-winning 3rd goal was scored with about two minutes left in the period by Will Latham.  With a pulled goalie by the Rangers, Coyotes goalie Lorne Toepper made a last second save to secure the championship.
