Both Dwight Junior High softball teams came away with championship hardware over the weekend. The Redbird A Squad earned the conference title with a 15-0 win over Gardner-South Wilmington, and the B Squad edged Mazon-Verona-Kinsman, 9-4 to take the B-team title.
In the tournament opener, the Redbird A Squad toppled Saratoga, 12-2. Megan Livingston was the winning pitcher and also added two hits. Kassy Kodat, Hailey Heath and Kira Bean had a pair of hits each while Erin Anderson added a single.
The Redbirds cruised to the tournament championship defeating GSW, 15-0 highlighted by a no-hitter from Livingston. Hailey Heath led the Redbird charge with three hits, while Kira Bean also posted a multi-hit game. Livingston, Anderson and Ashlyn Heikkila all had a hit apiece.
The DGS B Softball team earned the conference title by defeating Seneca, 15-11 and then beating MVK, 9-4 in the championship game.
The Redbirds came out with active bats against Seneca in their tournament opener. Madison Bailey was 2-for-2 scoring four runs. Kiah Handzus was 2-for-2 scoring a run. Sophie Buck was 1-for-1, Averi Jury and Avery Scheuer were both 2-for-3. Samantha Harsh was the winning pitcher going the distance and also going 2-for-4 at the plate. Seneca put pressure on the Redbirds playing small ball and forcing the Redbirds to play solid bunt defense.
In the championship game, Kiah Handzus pitched three solid innings giving up only one run and taking advantage of solid defense behind her. Harsh relieved Kiah giving up three runs in four innings while going 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple. Madison Bailey went 2-for-3 in the game scoring two runs. Handzus also went 2-for-4 at the plate. Avery Scheuer went 1-for-2 with a triple in the championship game.
